Siena: Once a Booming Medieval City
Recently I captured this shot of Siena off of hilltop country road, near where I live. Once a Roman colony, Siena became one of Europe’s greatest medieval cities until 1348 when most of its 100,000 population was wiped out by the plague, known as Black Death. This beautiful town is loaded with stunning historical sites, including Piazza del Campo, the unique shell-shaped square that slopes down to Palazzo Pubblico, home of numerous Sianese treasures. Each year in July and August the Palio, a famous horse race that dates back to the Middle Ages, is held at Piazza del Campo. A staged version of that race is in the latest James Bond movie. A Sianese friend of mine said the filming of that scene basically made the town inaccessible for three weeks.
I just found out Susan Littlefield has a granddaughter named Siena. I dedicate this shot to both of them.
