I had no idea what the locks signified when I photographed them on the wrought iron rails of an ancient church across from Trevi Fountain in Rome. With a little research, I learned that the locks are tokens of a teenage love craze which was inspired by the 2003 book and film Tre Metri Sopra Il Cielo. One would write the initials of his loved one or a significant date on the lock as a way of professing his undying love and then throw the key into the fountain. That is until the church finally decided on April 20th 2009, six years and thousands of locks later, and just three weeks after I'd spotted them, to hire workers to remove them with a pair of bolt cutters and dump them.
