Market Day in Foiano della Chiana
Often Fred and I don't depend on guide books to decide where to explore next in Italy. Via Google Earth, Fred looks for what appears to be an interesting medieval village, enters a place from there into his GPS, and off we go. Except for one time, we've never been disappointed. In fact we're usually thrilled by our findings, such as the Tuscan village of Foiano della Chiana. We lucked out and arrived at this beautiful little village on market day. Discovered it was one of the first Italian towns to elect a town council by popular vote. The oldest carnival in Italy started in Foiano in 1539. It's still held in June, and takes all year to prepare for.

I'm with Donald....perhaps we can get a group rate, because I bet there are others on the site who want to be in on this trip as well. Fabulous find, Deborah!!

I'm sure there's a great group rate out there. Due to global economic problems Italy's tourism is way down.

Sounds like an interesting place for the residents to live and for tourists to visit. Beautiful picture of the market place.

It sounds like a nice, simple lifestyle. The marketplace is such a riot of colors. It would be difficult to maintain an unhappy mood. So beautiful. Thanks for telling us about the village too.
