Penitensya or public penance is a common scene in the Philippines during the holy week specially on good friday. Black-hooded, half naked men bash their back with whips embedded with broken glass or thorn while walking under the scorching summer sun. Individuals do this self-flagellation to make amends for the sins they have committed.
