Stairway ruins, Castlewood Park, 2009
And on the pedestal these words appear:
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
Percy Bysshe Shelley
At the beginning of the 20th century, a great resort stood at the top of the bluffs above the Meramec River, 25 miles southwest of downtown St Louis. Nature is reclaiming the great staircase that led from the river railway station (now gone) to top of the bluff.
