The kavadi bearer proceeds to the river to cleanse themselves before they embark on their journey.

Thaipusam is a Hindu festival that commemorates both the birthday of Lord Murugan and the occasion where he received his vel (lance) from mother Parvathi to vanquish the evil demon Soorapadman. It is basically the festival that signals good winning over evil. In Malaysia it is a festival of 3 days for most but for the Kavadi bearers the journey starts 1 month earlier.
