Work began in 1997 on the deteriorating lighthouse on Sapelo Island thanks to the efforts of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Their grant proposal for restoring the lighthouse was awarded and the work was completed in 1998. This photo shows what visitors see when they step inside. I am standing flat-footed on the floor of the lighthouse with my camera pointed up. What isn't seen in this shot is the sound of children counting the number of steps leading to the top.
