thanks Muhammad - I actually have a cheap strobe kit with a softbox that I bought from b&h photo here in NYC. It's from their Impact line and it cost me about $120...in retrospect not the wisest purchase but I've put it too use a few times. The strobe came with a large softbox - it was placed camera left and it was level with the camera - the strobe was at full power. And it was about a foot away.
