Erected 600 feet east of the Sapelo Lighthouse, on Sapelo Island, GA , a twenty-five-foot-tall iron beacon serves as a front range light for guiding ships safely into Doboy Sounds. The Coast Guard used the tower during World War II as a lookout for German submarines. In the spring of 2008, I climbed into the beacon to find the lighthouse perfectly framed.
