First in a series of photos of the grounds including the cemetary of the Christ Church-Frederica----complete with palm and palmetto trees, and of course--the gorgeous ancient live oaks, draped in billowing sheets of Spanish Moss, This church is located next to Fort Frederica ---a military post established by the British in the early days of the Georgia colony to defend the English's claim of the Georgia coast from the Spanish who claimed Florida to the south---a famous battle was fought very close to this site as well between the British and Spanish in the "Battle of Bloody Marsh"--the British were victorious, assuring that the Georgia colony and especially the important port of Savannah, approximately 80 miles north was safe from Spanish attack and interference.
