Two taxi drivers having a chat between rides; Ueno, Tokyo, Japan
This shot was made using the camera attached to a monopod, held out in front of me by about 6ft and fired with a long cable release.
Why? Because the drivers had spotted me beforehand and the guy on the left had ducked back in his car.
I really wanted this shot; the angle of the cars, the background, the bridge overhead. All of it made a perfect frame. The predominance of orange really makes it pop as well. Especially together with the blue. The two colours are opposites on the colour wheel and them being in counterpoint in this shot is one of the reasons I stuck at getting it until I had it in the bag.
Because my editor wanted a strong horizontal shot to spread two pages, I just had to have this one.... and perservered with the heavy camera and heavy 11-16mm wide lens until I got it. Pretty tricky holding the rig out far enough from me and to keep it steady. But, job done!
This was part of a large documentary I recently shot about Tokyo Taxis, which has appeared in magazines in Japan, Poland, Australia and Singapore.
