This gave me chills. I love that you included the "1928-2004" in the shot. Beautiful.

Thank you Jacqueline, but the dates in the background are actually not my grandfathers- they are for his brother-in-law, who has a joined tombstone with his (still living) wife right next to my grandparents' joined stone. A bit of a compositional accident, but still a personal touch... and I believe James died in November too.

This is a very moving and touching photo. I was recently presented with a flag just like this at the death of my father, who was also a WWII veteran in the Navy. This photo brings a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye.

“ The Cotton Cloth
She was sitting there with tear filled eyes,
The love of her life is gone.
The service is over, now she must go.
They hand her a cloth, a cotton cloth,
A cloth of the red , white and blue.
She holds the cloth like a newborn child,
Lest it should slip away.
She clutched the cloth of the red, white and blue,
A reminder of days long gone.
That’s all she has of those long ago days.
The service is over, now she must go.
Clutching the cloth of the red, white and blue. “
