I am a supporter of Obama and my friend Derek voted early for McCain. Yesterday, on Election day, he called and invited me to join him at his shooting range where I made this photograph. This is a document of that day and perhaps a revealing portrait of Derek and some of his beliefs, which I do not necessarily share.

What does the implication of violence have to do with election day in this country? I don't get it.

I totally understand what you wanted to tell with this portrait Simon, and i must say i totally agree, i don´t see too many Obama supporters going to a shooting range to "let off some steam" this is an example of how a photo can say many things on so many different levels. Ah, and congratulations to all the people of USA for your new president.

I also understand perfectly what you mean, but I do not share Marcelo's idea. In this fucked world, there is of everything in all places. I am sure that the country of the freedoms also contains voters of Obama who practise the shot in his ranch. As there are voters of McCain who are a few cherubs. An image determines for the supposed implicit and explicit associations, but an image is a fragment of the reality, not the entire reality.
I prefer Obama, but the time will say...

indeed, this is just a fragment on all levels - of a place, time and a person.

yes, this was his reaction. This photo surely is different from others, hope you are able to take it easy when receiving angry emails ;-) a photographer must be able to take all kind of photos.. even if he does not agree with the one that is being photographed..

This is a successful photo if this has evoked such reaction. There's no place for generalizations and judgement in today's world, especially after Obama's victory. Barack Obama once told a journalist that the one book he would bring to the White House – besides the Bible – would be a bestseller about President Lincoln's inclusive leadership style, titled "Team of Rivals." The book's author, presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, makes the case that by bringing political opponents into his cabinet , Lincoln was able to solicit dissenting voices, make his enemies his allies, and lead the country through its greatest crisis.

Perhaps he was making the point that he will be holding his gun for as long as it's still legal, because soon even that Constitutional right will be revoked.
Regardless of my bitterness, nice photo.

I love this image along with the thoughts and emotions it provokes. I am a staunch Obama supporter and I agree with Chris Hodges. The politics of fear have reigned supreme for far too long. Derek can keep his gun as long as it isn't pointed at anyone. E pluribus unum.

Hope you are still friends. You can agree to disagree. I have some Democratic friends too although I am conservative... It takes a left wing and a right to fly!

without the included explanation about the time/place/circumstances of this shot, it just becomes a picture of a man smiling while holding as assault rifle. To really make it work, it needs to stand by itself without explanation, like all good photojournalistic shots. Just my $.02
