Gisimba Memorial Center. Rwanda. 2006.
Kareem holds the camera, as he and Director Damas Gisimba's youngest son check out the image. Gisimba Memorial Center is an orphanage on the outskirts of Kigali. Upwards of 200 children are clothed, fed, and cared for at the orphanage. There are 4 full-time carers ("mothers"), sporadic electricity, and a water pump. When one of Gisimaba's orphans holds a camera, it's a sight to see! This image makes it clear that cameras build communities, even though this community was already strong.
