Red Maple Seeds

The red maple in my yard is monoecious, bearing both male and female flowers. The shape of a samara (fruit) enables the wind to carry the seed away from the parent tree by spinning like a top in the breezes. Young children love to hold them up high and then drop them just to watch the spinning motion. In the spring the bright red color that covers the branches is gorgeous while the leaves are just beginning to develop.
