He was running around with the leaves in his mouth all day long. This picture was taken the day before Redden fell terribly ill.

We had rescued him this very day from a shelter down south - only 24 hours before he was to be put to sleep. You know, the final sleep. Our rescue group scrambled to save Redden, his mother and 8 of his brothers and sisters. We did it. But the day after we got these little buggers up to New Jersey, Redden became extremely weak. He could not lift his head or eat on his own. I took off of work to rush him to the emergency vet which is only a mile from my home. Once there, they ran quite a few tests only to find negative results. All they could do was prescribe him some antibiotics. All of our fingers were crossed.

That night, Redden slept sound on my boyfriend's pillow. In my head, I almost KNEW this would be his last night with us - but my heart pulled away from that outcome. Only 2 short days after we met this young pup, we were very much in love with him.

As morning approached, we found ourselves waking up to a piercing cry. It was Redden, tail wagging and head up. He was strong. He was alive. He survived. It has been a week and he only gets stronger as the days pass.

We are yet to find homes for his brothers and sisters, but now Redden has a forever home - with us.

Update: Redden is doing great! He has been diagnosed with being 100% deaf though. We are not sure if he was born with this or if it was due to his extremely high fever and terrible illness a few weeks back. He is a trooper and is adapting well! He already knows the hand signal for sit!

My pooch is a 'down south' rescue dog as well, in bad shape, and pulled from a high kill shelter. But I couldnt imagine a better dog! They really are grateful and show it every day. :)
