Somewhere in Eastern Turkey, travelling from Istanbul to Tehran.
The train makes a stop to pick up armed guards to traverse the somewhat fraught Kurdish region of Turkey. This guy offered everybody getting off the train some water, swiftly followed by a request for several Turkish lira.
The community that revolved around this train stop seemed to consist of a small tea shop and a mosque, and was made up of all sorts of characters. There were two friends, who had once fought on opposing sides of the Kurd-Turk conflict, now living in harmony despite quite fundamental political differences.
August 2008.
