Backwater is water turned back in its course by an obstruction either man-made (dams) or natural (a forest, a land piece).

i'm with Steve, i hope this is not where you live... but this photo is so wonderful. i love it in b&w! the details of the water is amazing as are the branches of the trees againist the grey sky. there is a strong sense of motion as well. in the center of the photo, looking to the horizion, there is nothing but water, adding to the sense of uneasyness. really powerful photo.
