Manhattan, NY (Self-Portrait, 2008 "After")
"After"
I took this "After" self-portrait as a follow-up to the image I took in 1991, when taoism fully entered my thinking (image preceding this one.) In the years since the "Before" image, when living broke in Philly on little more than beans and grits necessitated mindful vulnerability, I have come to flex and apprehend the suspended invisibles that constitute a majority of existence. I both seize and am seized by. In this way, "Heliotaxis" comes to mind, and as such, I bend and lean towards warmth for nutrition: cataracts of taoism and Buddhism permeate the soft materials of my being, frustrating any one impulse to follow an orthodoxy or ritual.
I am as in "the moment" as a Helianthus, and would rather call attention to my wiry arms than dwell in my tangled roots.

this is just wonderful. the composition and the use of the umbrellas and that killer background are all wonderful. but it's the feeling it leaves a viewer with that really matters...and this viewer feels joy and fulfillment when viewing this. nice work.
